Poetry Contest: All Ages

Event Details

Celebrate National Poetry Month by entering our contest! Prizes will be awarded in several categories for youth and adults.


To Enter the Competition: Poems must be printed and turned in at Circulation at the Marcellus Free Library by April 30 @ 7:00 PM.


Submission Guidelines:

  • Participants may submit only one poem.
  • Submissions must be original work.
  • All submissions must be in Times New Roman, 12-point font.
  • Submissions must not exceed 30 lines.
  • At the top of the page, every submission should have:
    • Author's first and last name;
    • the submission category; and
    • contact information, including email, address, and phone number

Please note: Submissions will not be returned to the author.


Submission Categories:

Participants can submit their work in the following relevant categories:

Youth

  • Grades 4, 5, 6
  • Grades 7, 8, 9
  • Grades 10, 11, 12

Adults

  • Ages 18 – 54
  • Ages 55+

Prizes: Winners will be notified in early May 2024.

Ages 18 - 54 

Prize:  

  • One seasonal workshop of the winner's choice at the Downtown Writers Center (DWC) in *Downtown Syracuse, paid for by the library. The workshop must be taken in the Summer or Fall of 2024.

Ages 55+ 

Prize:  

  • One seasonal workshop of the winner’s choice at the Downtown Writers Center (DWC) in *Downtown Syracuse, paid for by the library. The workshop must be taken in the Summer or Fall of 2024.

This contest will be adjudicated by Onondaga County Poet Laureate, Georgia A. Popoff.
